2009 All-District 9-AA

 By Kris Freeman, Connection Sports

Bryan Dixon fought through a tough year of adversity as a senior for the White House Blue Devils, but through injury helped lead his team to the first round of the playoffs.42

With the release of the 2009 All-District 9-AA team on Wednesday, Dixon has been named the District 9-AA Most Valuable Player, joining nine other Blue Devils on the team. Dixon rushed for 926 yards and eight touchdowns, averaging over 6.7 yards per carry, while catching five passes for 134 yards and also returning kicks and playing defense.

He made 34 tackles with four passes broken up and two interceptions, and had 1,249 all-purpose yards. He edged out Goodpasture back Stephon Dawson for the award, as Dawson was named the Offensive Player of the Year. Goodpasture’s Parker Burton was named the Defensive Player of the Year.

First team positional members from White House included offensive tackle Walt Wages, wide receiver Trent McEwen, defensive lineman/end Aussie Light, linebacker Zack Byrd and defensive back Travis Brown. Other Blue Devils named to the team were Kevin Jackson, Joey Smith, Jonathan Duke and Andy James – all of which are underclassmen and will return next season along with Brown and McEwen.

Wages, Byrd and Light are seniors. Wages struggled through injury during his White House career but helped lead a Blue Devils offense to 288.9 yards per game including 154.6 on the ground.

Byrd led the team in tackles with 106 plus two interceptions, while Light made 43 stops with four sacks and 10 tackles for losses while also throwing for 502 yards at quarterback. McEwen broke the single-season reception record at White House with 42 receptions his sophomore year for 623 yards and six scores, and Brown was fourth on the team in tackles with 48 while also punting for 33.8 yards on average.

Jackson was second on the team with 100 tackles including breaking the single-game tackle mark with 21, while Duke had 80 tackles with seven for losses. Andy James made 32 tackles and caught 10 passes for 133 yards and three scores at TE/DE, while Smith made 23 tackles at linebacker and played offensive guard.
